Strategies That Might ACTUALLY Help Creative Block
Ever get started on a project and inspiration just ISN’T hitting? Or you try a few concepts, but nothing is really landing? I’ve been there. Super frustrating. Here’s how I move through creative block:
1. Create a Dedicated Container
When faced with resistance in creative work, our minds often seek distractions, like mindlessly scrolling through social media or switching tasks. To overcome this, set aside a specific time and space to focus solely on the creative challenge at hand. Remove distractions, be fully present, and immerse yourself in the project. I've found that once I commit to this dedicated container, ideas start flowing and progress is made.
Time blocking on your calendar is great for this!
2. Try on a New Persona
Sometimes, adopting a different perspective can work wonders. Imagine how an artist or designer you admire would approach your project. Step into their shoes, explore their techniques, and see things from a fresh angle. Use their perspective as a springboard to spark your own creative instincts.
You can emulate someone else’s techniques, but please, don’t copy. Trust and apply your creative instinct to everything you create.
3. Make Space for Joy
Creativity thrives when we're in a positive and fulfilled state of mind. If you're feeling empty or down, take a break and indulge in activities that bring you joy. Whether it's visiting a thrift store, spending time in nature, or engaging in a hobby you love, replenish your emotional well-being. Returning to your project with a happier perspective can often lead to breakthroughs.
4. Change Up Your Scenery
Sometimes, a change of environment can work wonders for creativity. Head to a coffee shop, where the buzzing atmosphere and caffeine boost can stimulate fresh ideas. Alternatively, simply tidying up your workspace or rearranging your surroundings can create a renewed sense of energy and inspiration.
5. Switch Up Your Medium
If you've been staring at a computer screen for too long, consider switching to a different medium. Grab a pen and paper and start sketching concepts or jotting down ideas. Personally, I find that using a large sketchbook allows me to freely explore new possibilities. Experimenting with different mediums can unlock hidden creativity and break the monotony of your usual process.
